What’s Getting in the Way of Getting it Done?

This is a handout from Dr. Peg Dawson, author of the Smart but Scattered series, and an expert on Executive Functioning Skills.

To use this document:

  1. Ask your child what is difficult about getting work done.  The more you can use their own words as a starting point, the more likely they will be engaged in a solution.
  2. If they are able to tell you, match their difficulties with the Obstacle column on this handout.  If they don’t know, look at the Obstacle column together and see what resonates.
  3. Look at the Strategy column and identify any they’d like to try.
  4. Run an experiment!  Try it out for a week and see what happens.  If it doesn’t work, tweak it and try again.

I hope you find this helpful!
